Jose María Yturralde (1942 - )Prelude (warm green) 1993 Acrylic on canvas 162 x 130 cm. The work is in an important private collection Certificate of Authenticity
Prelude belongs to the series of the same name in which José María Yturralde investigates the relationships between geometry, colour and perception. The composition is organised by a succession of squares of decreasing size and variable orientation, arranged in such a way as to produce a sensation of displacement and transformation of the pictorial space.
The rigor of the geometric structure and the use of chromatic contrasts link these works with the investigations of Op Art and kinetic art, although Yturralde develops these resources from a conception of abstraction. In Prelude, repetition, variation and color do not function only as compositional elements, but as instruments to activate the viewer's perception.
