Jacopo Bassano, born Jacopo dal Ponte, was a pivotal figure of the Venetian Renaissance who evolved from provincial painter to sophisticated Mannerist master. Initially trained in his father's workshop in Bassano del Grappa, his early style was influenced by the balanced compositions of Bonifazio de' Pitati and Titian; however, he soon moved towards a more expressive and dynamic aesthetic, characterized by elongated figures and forced perspectives. He is best known for pioneering a unique genre of religious painting that integrated naturalistic depictions of rural life, animals, and domestic details, elements that prefigured the Baroque period and influenced later artists such as El Greco. As his career progressed, Bassano experimented with dramatic chiaroscuro and a luminous and "magical" use of color, often using nocturnal settings to intensify the emotional charge of his biblical accounts. Despite remaining mostly in his small hometown rather than the artistic center of Venice, his innovative fusion of high-style mannerism with rustic realism cemented his legacy as one of the most influential Italian painters of the sixteenth century. The work has been exhibited in an exhibition curated by José Camón Aznar, one of the most famous Spanish art historians of the twentieth century. In his catalogue for this exhibition, objects from the **90* range are found in the chapter *"The Road to Calvary and the Supper at Emmaus." * *Attribution in 1949:* Almost certainly listed as *"Leandro Bassano"* *The Theme:* In the 1949 catalogue, this specific composition is described as a still life (still life/kitchen scene) with the Supper at Emmaus in the background. *The connection to "Seville":* The reason this painting was in that exhibition is that it was probably part of an outstanding *Sevillian private collection* (such as the Casa de Medinaceli or the collection of a local cathedral dignitary). At that time, these works were used to demonstrate the "Italian influence" on Sevillian masters, such as Velázquez.
